CHAPTER SIXTEEN
After Hawk left, I didnât know what to do with myself. I paced the kitchen. Sat in my room for a little while. Decided to take a shower and get dressed. And now Iâm sitting in the kitchen again, listening to Hammerhead and the others lounging around in the main room of the clubhouse. Theyâre shouting, yelling, and cheering raucously as they watch a football game. It makes me think back to the football games I went to back in high school and a sense of melancholy descends over me.
The way Hawk pointedly ignored me when he left earlier told me all I needed to know. After heâd left, I slipped into his room and looked around. My note was gone so I know he got it. The way he left told me that heâs not going to help me. I knew it was a long shot when I wrote the note out last night. Longer than a long shot. But I had a faint flicker of hope as I wrote it and remembered the compassion I saw in his eyes. The kindness.
But that flickerâs been extinguished now, leaving nothing but a cold, smoldering pit of ashes. I can honestly say Iâve never felt this low in my life. And given what Iâve endured since being abducted, thatâs saying something. But I let myself foolishly entertain the notion that somebody might help me, that I might have a way out of here.
But my hope is gone.
And now that my hope has been extinguished, all I feel is despair.
Heartbreak.
And complete, utter depression.
âMolly, get in here and bring us some beers!â Hammerhead calls out.
I sigh and fight back the tears that are welling in my eyes. Heâll get pissed if he sees me crying. But Iâm so depressed and so frustrated, I donât know what else to do. The last thing I want to be doing right now is playing bar wench for these pigs. Especially when theyâre in the same room as the beer cooler. That pig is literally ten feet from the bar. All he has to do is stand his fat ass up and walk over to the cooler and get his own stinking beers. But no, holler at me to come serve them instead. Yeah, that makes sense.
âMolly! Now!â Hammerhead screams at me.
Wiping my eyes, I sniff back the tears and walk out into the main room. I avoid eye contact with any of them as I walk to the bar and pull six bottles out of the cooler and set them on a tray. I pop the tops off them, then carry the tray over to the tables where theyâre sitting, handing them all out.
âGrab us a couple bowls of peanuts too, while youâre up,â Hammerhead snaps.
The guys all stand up and cheer wildly, almost knocking over their full bottles. A couple of the empty ones do topple over and hit the ground, shattering on impact.
âClean those up,â Hammerhead orders.
Though he hasnât laid a hand on me since Hawk has been here, heâs been more demanding than usual.
